If we have to make a comparison between the book and the movie, obviously we are going to have a lot of differences. One of the first ones is at the beginning of the story. In the movie appeared a very clear context in which the characters were talking about music and the band: It was a wedding. However, in the book, it was not that clear the place the characters were in. For that reason, when you were in this part of the book you maybe were trying to find out where the story was taking place.
Also, there is another part that in the book is not so funny as the movie is. This is the part when Jimmy was choosing the people for the band. In the movie this part, in my opinion was very amusing because there were lots of different and rare people coming into Jimmy’s house. Nevertheless, in the book this part was not funny for me.
In general, it is common to have this type of differences if you recreate a movie from a book. And I have to say that I liked both. Why? Because the book showed lots of details in terms of characters and other stuffs and the movie showed more action that the book could give you.
Finally, I think The Commitments is a very interesting novel, because the story of how the band got together and then performed the Dublin soul at places, or how the mastermind behind the group tried to achieve something more than success, are things that really move you if you are a musician or someone who likes music from inside.
