Have You Got Soul?

The Commitments (1988) is the story of a band that takes place in the north of Dublin, in the middle of a hardworking class neighborhood.

If we have to make a comparison between the book and the movie, obviously we are going to have a lot of differences. One of the first ones is at the beginning of the story. In the movie appeared a very clear context in which the characters were talking about music and the band: It was a wedding. However, in the book, it was not that clear the place the characters were in. For that reason, when you were in this part of the book you maybe were trying to find out where the story was taking place.

Also, there is another part that in the book is not so funny as the movie is. This is the part when Jimmy was choosing the people for the band. In the movie this part, in my opinion was very amusing because there were lots of different and rare people coming into Jimmy’s house. Nevertheless, in the book this part was not funny for me.

In general, it is common to have this type of differences if you recreate a movie from a book. And I have to say that I liked both. Why? Because the book showed lots of details in terms of characters and other stuffs and the movie showed more action that the book could give you.

Finally, I think The Commitments is a very interesting novel, because the story of how the band got together and then performed the Dublin soul at places, or how the mastermind behind the group tried to achieve something more than success, are things that really move you if you are a musician or someone who likes music from inside.

They Are Part of My Life...

As you may know I’m a crazy fan of Music, specially Rock & Metal. Therefore, I want to share with you one of the things that I’m passionate for: Electric Guitars. I think they are such an amazing creation and I love playing them. There are many guitar models and you can find them from the very basic (with just only one pickup) to the most extreme and complex ones.

They were created in the middle of the past century and since then they have become quite popular.

The models that I love most are the “Ibanez Universe 7-strings ” (see the one with green pickups), and also the “Flying V” (the white one). They are one of the most popular in the Metal music field because of its powerful sounds and original shapes.

In my case, I have a “Flying V” and I use it a lot when I rehearse and when I create and manifest my own music.

An Excellent site never found until now...

Wow! I am really impressed because I had never checked the BBC Learning English website. Now that I have been sailing through it I realized how many interesting things it has and also I believe that this website is going to be one of my favourite ones this year.

I think this site is quite good and it offers a lot of help for our process of learning. Why? Because it has a lot of exciting things for the English practicing such as News, Quizzes and Exams, Grammar & Vocabulary stuff etc; where you can find lots of exercises and material in order to get what you want to learn from English.

Also, there is a part which I liked that is related to being sarcastic. It is really good because you can learn some interesting phrases about how to say things in order to " be funny or to make a point”(From BBC, See the link below).

Finally, I recommend to take your time and check it because it won’t disappoint you at all.

Something to believe in...

Sir Ken Robinson talked about the consciousness of what we should aim for as future teachers: To encourage and to perfect children in order to they can develop themselves in what they really want to achieve. This is a very important thought and also I truly believe in it.

In addition, to make mistakes is something that culturally is not accepted, but If we can put ourselves in a more free position we would realize that it is only a trivial believe. The thing is that mistakes are part of our lives and they are important if we can take the learning of them.

Finally, it is really important to point out what Robinson said about Creativity : This is the potential that all human beings have born with. That is why we have to develop it in order to let children and also people to find what they are looking for in life.

A Very Useful Site...

Well, one of my favourite sites on Internet is Chilewarez.org. This site is one of those where you can find many interesting things for downloading and also tons of useful information related to almost everything you want or you have been looking for. In this way, you can find from PC utilities to just a boring chat =]]. It is important to point out that you can also share anything you want on its rooms.

The story of how I found this site is because I needed an antivirus for my PC and I found it here. Since then, I have been part of this virtual community as member which means that I visit it three or four times a week.

I really like this site because my life has become easier and also cheaper. This is because I do not have to pay anything for programs or movies and I entertain myself a lot searching and finding different things for my convenience.

And there is a section which says “Educación & Profesión” where you can find lots of downloadable information from dictionaries to English programs.

'I have become an embarrassment'

This is the Story of John Smithers an important business man who has lost all his fortune and family because of drugs and a badly irrational behaviour.

Smithers is a 70 years old and tells his story in first person. He declares that the past two decades he has spent a lot of money on prostitutes, which has brought to him lots of troubles with his currently wife. Also, on the business field he has made very bad decisions and as a result of that he is in a very difficult situation with banks and his family. His children have blamed on him because of his behaviour arguing that they wanted to inherit the fortune but because of his irresponsible actions they will not going to inherit nothing but debts.

Smithers is already conscious that he needs medical help but what he does not know is how this story will end.

This story seems to be a very sad one, but analysing it make us think on how is it possible that a man who had a very respectful image and a growing business is now in a living hell?

Well, the facts are clear. Sometimes overkill could be very dangerous. And also, this story brings to our minds the well-known question ---

Money = Happiness?
